![]() A few years ago, it seemed that these models were fetching the highest dollars.but I haven't noted a lot of well-maintained 440s, 460s or 480s for sale lately. They added reverb shortly after and you got the early 400 series amps (e.g., the 440, the 460 and the 480 roughly correspond to the 213, the 260 and the 280). You may want to research the differences by doing some searches of the Magnatone-Valco (yahoo) group's archives. Note that there are "a" versions of some of these models e.g., 260a and 280a. ![]() In the last few months 280s in particular are enjoying the highest market prices I've seen in a long time. The most popular models from that era are the 213 Troubadour, the 260 and the 280 (stereo), though there were other models as well and several variants of these models. Magnatone really hit their stride in the late 50s with the Bonham's patented, varistor-based vibrato circuit. There are quite a few other models from this era that turn up on eBay and craigslist frequently (student, varsity, etc.) they're really nice little amps but haven't caught on in a big way (they're mostly low-powered and relatively clean sounding). There are a few rare early/mid-50s models (pre-vibrato) models that seem to fetch relatively large dollars. The amps from their real early years (40s) haven't become all that popular. A number of these companies also had amps made by other smaller mfgs (like Sano or Ampeg) so it's interesting to study the models offered by the various companies/brands. And there were a couple of other companies that used Magnatone type circuitry (Laub and Audio Guild) but are not really Magnatones. One point worth making that is a little bit unusual about Magnatone is that they OEM'ed amps under many other names: PANaramic, Twilighter, Tonemaster, Lyric, Titano, Pac-Amp, Americana, Giulietti, Divinci, etc. Here's a bit of the birds-eye view that I've developed over the years.
